He studied philosophy and psychology at the Faculty of Philosophy of Charles University in Prague. In 1957 – 1961 he worked as dramaturg of Concert and Variety Agency in Prague, in 1961 he became a director in Czechoslovak Radio in Banská Bystrica, in 1971 – 1973 he became a chief editor for culture in Czechoslovak Radio in Bratislava and in 1973 – 1976 he worked as a head of the Theatre Department of the Ministry of Culture. In 1976 he came to the Slovak National Theatre where he worked as an artistic director of the drama department until 1979. From 1979 he took part in the Slovak Dramatic Artists Association – firstly as a head of its artistic and ideological department (1979 - 1987) and later as its president (1987 - 1990). From 1991 he works as a freelance artist. It was already during his studying he started publishing short prose forms, reviews and glosses on the cultural life in journals and newspapers. As a playwright he started with radio plays (Sviatosť naivity (The Sacrament of Naivety),1967; Návrat (Return), 1968; Šok (Shock), 1969; Portrét neznámej (A Portrait of the Unknown Lady), 1971; Pavučina (Cobweb), 1978) and television plays (Strecha úniku (The Roof of Exit), 1971; Biely autobus (A White Bus), 1972; 39 stupňov v tieni (39 Degrees in Shadow), 1976; Vymodelujem more (I´ll Model the Sea), 1984), later he focused on theatre plays. He captured attention of the theatrical public already with his début which was presented by local theatres as well as theatres in other countries (Russia, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Finland, Bulgaria, Italy), and for his significant contribution to the development of Slovak dramatic art he was decorated the 2nd Class Pribina Cross in 2003.
